How to Run a Pool
A practical checklist for setting rules, collecting entries, and keeping your pool moving smoothly during tournament week.
Start with the format
Decide the tournament, scoring method, entry deadline, and payout structure before you invite anyone. The fewer “we will figure it out later” decisions you leave open, the fewer disputes you will create during the event.
Publish the rules early
Share a short rules page or message that covers:
- who can enter
- how many lineups or teams each person can submit
- when picks lock
- how ties are handled
- how payouts work
Keep communication simple
Use one clear source of truth for announcements. If you update a rule after inviting players, call out what changed and when it becomes effective.
During the tournament
Post leaderboard links early, answer rule questions in writing, and avoid ad hoc exceptions unless every entrant agrees. Consistency matters more than cleverness once play begins.
